UNITEN Putrajaya Campus began life in 1994 as Institut Kejuruteraan Teknologi Tenaga Nasional (IKATAN) offering twinning engineering and business management courses with universities here and abroad at both undergraduate and graduate levels. It was an arm of Institut Latihan Sultan Ahmad Shah (ILSAS), the training headquarters of TNB located within the Putrajaya vicinity. Three years later, in 1997, IKATAN was rebranded and promoted to Universiti Tenaga Nasional, thus becoming the first private university in the country. The colleges that occupy UNITEN's Putrajaya Campus are the College of Foundation and General Studies (CFGS), the College of Engineering (COE), the College of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) and the College of Graduate Studies (COGS).

Uniten offers many level of study from foundation to higher education. It offers different courses that meet the wishes of the students after they finished their high school. Uniten is a multidisciplinary that has more than 6 faculties, 8 centres and five institutes which covers the whole spectrum of learning from the engineering to business courses . Engineering programs, computers science in all stage of higher educations are provided as well.

Research is one of the key agenda of University Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). This is clearly worded in its mission statement as, "We are committed to deliver a unique and enriching learning experience that fosters innovation and research". Accordingly, Innovation & Research Management Centre (iRMC) UNITEN was established in order to provide a proper mechanism and research management system, effectively and efficiently so as to translate this mission statement into operation.
